“The 30 minutes you spend reading this will most definitely change your life for the better, or prevent someone else from suffering a life of hell in their own skin. READ THIS!”
— Suzy Cohen, RPh, author of Drug Muggers

Contrasts are used in millions of scans annually. Yet for many, the aftermath of these routine procedures is anything but ordinary. I investigate the science, the stories, and the silence.

People impacted annually by MRI diagnostic imaging.
Over one hundred million people around the globe have been injected with gadolinium contrast during an MRI scan, trusting it was the right thing to do. But what if that trust was misplaced? MRI contrast side effects are more common, more serious, and more persistent than most patients are ever told.
Rather than being essential for life-saving diagnoses, gadolinium contrast seldom adds information that can’t be obtained in other ways. And contrary to claims of safety, it’s now indisputable that gadolinium is retained long-term inside your body, whilst there’s no evidence this is without consequence. The gadolinium side effects can be devastating and far-reaching.
This is the reality that more and more people are waking up to. Discover what the billion-dollar contrast industry would rather you didn’t know.
You probably don’t have all the information you need to make an informed decision. After reading this book, you’ll be armed with the tools to have a confident, evidence-based conversation with your doctor about whether contrast is truly necessary.
You’ll understand the damage gadolinium can wreak inside your body, and what you can start doing today to support your gadolinium toxicity recovery. Dr Catriona Walsh draws on her own experience, her medical training, and her expertise in nutritional therapy for recovery to share natural strategies that actually work.
I wrote Contrasts at a particular point in my recovery journey. The science in it is solid, and the dietary and lifestyle foundations hold up well. But I’ve learned a great deal more since then, particularly about oxalate toxicity and its role in gadolinium retention. Some of the dietary approaches in the book may be high in oxalates if followed without that awareness. I’d recommend reading it alongside my more recent work on ATTRACT Theory and oxalate management. A second book is in the works.

Dr Walsh’s book is an important addition to one’s medical library, be it for patient or practitioner. It offers a well-researched and resourced primer on what we know about contrast materials, mechanism of action and health implications. It is the long overdue informed consent not routinely offered by standard of care, as well as a call to action to find safer methods of imaging to better serve our patients. And finally, Dr Walsh offers sound advice on how best to recover from gadolinium toxicity including many diet and lifestyle recommendations that lead to overall optimal health and mitochondrial repair.
— Dr Nasha Winters, N.D., L.Ac., FABNO — Author of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer
A comprehensive, insightful and compelling read, written in an accessible and personable manner. A must-read for anyone who is struggling to make sense of their health issues and suspect such issues began or were compounded by a contrast MRI. This book clearly highlights for both professionals and the public the concerning absence of informed consent when it comes to outlining risk within our healthcare system.
— Orla Connolly, Northern Ireland
The author carefully talks you through what might be going on — the changes in your body that you’ve been struggling to understand make sense, as she explains the invader you now have in your body in terms that are suitable for both a physician and a layperson, but holds your hand and brings you through the other side with her warm manner and often wry observations. In truth, gadolinium poisoning will possibly turn out to be a horrific tragedy, but people like Dr Catriona Walsh are at the coal face now, doing all they can to support victims, to bravely share their own story and to enlighten others.
— Rich Isted, London — 5 stars
Dr Walsh offers hope for those who have suffered with gadolinium toxicity. CONTRAST should be read by not only the patient dealing with this ensuing nightmare, but every radiologist in practice! You will laugh, cry and scream when you read this book. But mostly, you will be happy you finally understand what happened to you.
— Suzy Cohen, RPh — Author of Drug Muggers
“I wish I had read this book before I went to MRI and got the gadolinium contrast. This book gave hope for healing. And emotional support that I am not alone.”Thank you for writing this book.
“Dr Walsh’s book is the first resource I’ve found that really attempts to address these kinds of issues. The book is a surprisingly quick read. It is clear and well-written, and the author has a warm and accessible writing style. She manages to make complex scientific and medical concepts accessible and understandable (even enjoyable).”A well-written, well-researched resource — L. Hall
“Advice from a fellow sufferer who is also a medical doctor” — John G Marquess
“Dr Walsh possesses impressive credentials; medical degrees from both Cambridge University and Queen’s University. She has also studied with the Institute of Health Sciences. Added to this, she has years of experience as a specialist paediatric doctor with the UK National Health Service. Not surprisingly therefore her book is very well researched. She explains complex issues in a way which makes it easier for the lay person to understand.”
Available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle.
